Modern Mainstream Kitchen
It was a pleasure to design this nautical modern mainstream kitchen for this Calgary based showhome in Mahogany. The design concept was to replicate clean sleek horizontal lines similar to a yacht. This concept was named ‘Nautical Mainstream’. Here are some ways NFID managed to achieve this design concept in the kitchen:1) We kept the kitchen perimeter in flat profile walnut cabinetry.
2) We designed the base cabinets along the back wall in banks of drawers to maintain a cohesive horizontal visual line (replicating a horizon line).
3) We selected the island and perimeter countertops the same grey quartz to help support our horizon line concept and provide cohesiveness amongst the horizontal planes in the space.
4) We applied bead board panelling in secondary visual areas including under the eating bar. The bead board panelling contributed as an ‘understated element’, supporting our nautical concept. 5) In order to reduce the amount of visual clutter on the countertops, we added an open shelf cabinet to the end of the island. This open shelving provides functional access to cookbooks and other accessories.
6) Emphasis is very important in a space. We provided emphasis in the kitchen by lacquering the island cabinetry a ‘deep marine blue’ colour.
7) We selected a modern and rectalinear undermount stainless steel sink.8) We accessorized with simple neutral items, balancing out glass, greenery, and stone.
9) We selected appliances with clean lines to support our modern & sleek concept.
10) We tied in blue accents in our eating bar placemat & napkins, added some walnut wood and clear glass to provide further visual balance in the space.
11) We selected a marine caged pendant with white enamel to support our nautical concept.
12) We tied in the grey quartz countertops with the grey stained hardwood floors to provide horizontal visual balance.
13) The grey quartz countertop selection had a subtle sparkle that represented a starry night out on the ocean. We felt this was fitting for our design.
14) The tray ceiling detail represents unique illuminated ceiling details often found in yachts. The tray ceiling housed our pot lights and supported our centralized work area in the kitchen around the island.
15) We selected simple stainless steel cabinet hardware pulls. We applied the pulls along the kitchen perimeter to add linear detail on the flat walnut cabinetry.
This modern mainstream kitchen is a beautiful space. It is a fantastic example of taking a concept or theme and applying it through design details that are thoughtful and classic. This kitchen is functional, durable, and will withstand the trends of time.
